History
San Vincenzo has an ancient history, dating back to the Upper Paleolithic period, and its human presence has continued to the present day. The name "San Vincenzo" appears for the first time in 1304, but its origins are even more remote.
The Etruscans recognized the strategic importance of San Vincenzo, given its proximity to Populonia, an important mining and forestry centre. During the 9th and 5th centuries BC, San Vincenzo became an industrial and commercial hub.
With the arrival of the Romans and the Via Aurelia, a village and a port were built. However, Populonia remained the hub of the area due to its morphology.
The wars between the Byzantines, Goths and Lombards marked the Tuscan coast, with Populonia losing importance in favor of Massa Marittima. The Lombards, followers of San Benedetto, sent San Wilfrido to protect the area from Saracen attacks and it was thanks to him and the Benedictine monks that the place was called San Vincenzo.
